A Shakespearean Fancy Dress Ball for Romeo & Juliette at La Monnaie/De Munt Theatre now!
Three ladies made it happen for nowadays burlesque performances with flabbergasting costumes: and it is a world known Gounod’s opera Romeo & Juliette we are speaking about!
And these are: Cecile Tremolieres, a French costume and stage designer, Julia Burbach, who is a director of this memorable piece and and Valentina Peleggi, a conductor, who made her debute during this opera at the National Theatre! We should pay tribute to costumes workshop director Bruno Fatalot, who is known for its experiments with fabrics and textiles!

What was happening on the stage during 3 hours many can describe as a dialogue of music, scenography, lights and much drama! It was a true cacophony of senses! Another sensorium’s festival to take hats off! It was just enough to avoid kitsch and keep the balance!

A classical peace was spaced up against the clean lines, so we enjoyed a perfect decor, a seasoned dance performance and a true ball! Even for the opening night the Theatre asked the public to come with various masks, so it feels inclusive, what’s happening in the stage and what’s happening in the foyers in between!

You can see the rainbow of colors from powder pink to black and all the mixed combinations!
The costumes were tuned according to the parts of the opera’s developments! This is a typical characteristics of this Theatre: it shows us how to entertain ourselves during classical peaces with the other means: cloths, sounds, decors, designs, movements and what not! Each and every performance becomes a true musical in a classical theatre! The costume designer got her prize this year: “The Best Costume Designer of the Year 2026 @ Oper!”

Ksenia Proshina, a Russian-born opera singer, a pupil of the famous Elena Obraztsova, was staring as the Juliette, with a team of stars, accompanying her! The public was varied with many young faces around, which is so sweet to witness! It means the theater has succeeded to attract mixed audience at the end of the day and I was a part of it, having tears while applauding to the theatre! Because the love story torched me anyway and anyhow! Bravo!
